🔤 About me, as a new language learning polyglot | Polyglot ABC
A little something about me, on my journey in learning multiple new languages and becoming a polyglot…
As of Wednesday, June 13th, 2018, I consider myself a starting polyglot, 'cause that was the day I committed myself to actually, seriously, and with dedication, start learning multiple new languages.
Although I grew up tri-lingual, and picked up a multitude of new languages along the years, I had only occasionally dedicated my time and effort to learning a particular new language, at times when learning that specific new language was of special interest to me. Mostly when I had a girlfriend that spoke that new language.
Throughout the years, these motivations faded as the relationships ended, but through travels and having unexpected encounters, I noticed how wonderful it is to communicate with people in their native language. And also how much of a pity it is when you know you know a certain language, but have forgotten the bulk of it to have a nice conversation in that language.
So one day, Wednesday, June 13th, 2018, to be exact, I decided to pick up all these languages I already had some knowledge of, and expand them with new languages I had always wanted to learn before.
Of course, this brought with it a dilemma… How would I do that ("🔤 Learning a new language - Beyond the first steps to becoming a polyglot")?
I have at least 8 languages that I had encountered firsthand before, and a dozen new languages which I am interested in learning. No way am I going through them one new language by one new language, taking multiple years to master each new language, and thus being dead before I had learned all of these new languages I'm interested in learning.
There is really only one way I would achieve that amount of learning new languages, and that is by learning multiple languages, old and new, at the same time ("🔤 Learning multiple new languages simultaneously, and not just one at a time (polyglot or not)"). I still had to prioritize the new languages I'd be learning, and dropped some of the new languages from my first round list, but at the moment I'm at 14, extra/new, languages I'm learning at the same time ("🔤 Learning a new language - Step 1 to becoming a polyglot").
Tell me, and other readers, a bit about *your* new language learning/polyglot story in the comments section below:
- When did you start learning a new language?
- What were your background and motivations for learning a new language?
- How many/Which (new) languages are you learning at a time?
